The restoration works on the Québec Parliament Building started on 5th October 2005, 110 years after the initial instalment of the cornice. The very top of the cornice is at 52,5 m distance from the street pavement.
Workmen in a basket hanging from a 180 Tons heavy crane with an arm of 80 meters had the cornice dismantled and descended. Then the cornice railings were removed, in one piece. The surface was roughened at first using glass micro marbles.Confronted with such an extent of corrosion threatening to destroy the entire project as well as generating rust traces on the roof of the tower, it became necessary to expand the operations so as to ensure the survival of this significant piece of work. It has been decided to start dismantling the entire piece of art, approximately 450 pieces, before continuing with the treatment.
